Results from 16th annual Crazy Horse Stampede

CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL – Two South Dakota cowboys might have to flip a coin to see who wears the Crazy Horse Stampede championship buckle.

Clay Cowan of Highmore and Clay Schaack of Wall tied for all-around cowboy honors over the two-day PRCA event. That’s a first in the 16-year history of the rodeo at Crazy Horse Memorial.

On Friday, Terry Fisher of Fort Yates, N.D., won the all-around honors for the Great Plains Indian Rodeo Association portion of the Stampede.

Top finishers after the Saturday-Sunday PRCA segment were:

Bareback: 1. Dustin Luper, Black Hawk, S.D., 80 points; 2. Scott Montague, Fruitdale, S.D., 79 points; 3. Dan Miller, Raleigh, N.D., 73 points; 4. (tie) Donald Miller, Raleigh, and Joe Gunderson, White, S.D., 72 points.

Barrel racing: 1. Lonnie Farella, Newcastle, Wyo., 14.94 seconds; 2. Pam Rolph, Camp Crook, S.D., 15.00; 3. Jamalee Holzer, Hermosa, S.D., 15.04; 4. Melissa Bachand, Belle Fourche, S.D., 15.09.

Bull riding: 1. Logan Allen, Crescent, Iowa, 68 points; 2. (tie) Aaron Brewer, Box Elder, S.D.; Shawn Coleman, Springfield, S.D., Tater Hins, Huron, S.D., 67 points.

Saddle bronc: 1. (tie) Danny Martin, Red Owl, S.D.; Joe Wishard, Lantry, S.D.; and Branden Wester, Philip, S.D., 78 points; 4. Dusty Hausauer, Dickinson, N.D., 74 points.

The 16th annual Crazy Horse Stampede lived up to its “Rainy Day Rodeo” nickname Friday. Rain arrived late in the afternoon to soak contestants and fans but not in time to curtail the Great Plains Indian Rodeo Association action. Terry Fisher of Fort Yates, N.D., won the all-around champion title after he and partner Don Bettleyoun tied for first in team roping. Fisher also finished runnerup in calf roping. There were 26 contestants in the arena events staged by Korkow Rodeos.

Bareback 1. Austin Janis, Lower Brule, 81 points; 2. (Tie) Paul Palczweskit, Buffalo, S.D., and Chad Brunsch, Pine Ridge, 69 points.

Bull Riding 1. Charles Winters, Kyle, 76; 2. Shilo Amiotte, Wanblee, 74; Trevor Jacobs, 54. 

Calf roping 1. Dallas Louden, Martin, 11.9 seconds; 2. Terry Fisher, Fort Yates, 15; 3. Del Maynard, Owanka, 44.9 seconds.

Two defending champs were again riding atop their events after the Crazy Horse Stampede’s first day of PRCA action on Saturday.

Defending Stampede event champs Tigh Anderberg of Mobridge and Matt Gilbert of Camp Crook led in bareback and steer wrestling, respectively. In fact, South Dakotans led in five of the seven pro rodeo categories.

Pam Rolph of Camp Crook led barrel racing, a scant 0.1 second ahead of Skye Martin of Van Tassell, Wyo.

The 16th annual rodeo concludes on Sunday, June 18; the second PRCA go-round starts at 2 p.m.

Saturday’s top finishers were:

Bareback: 1. Tigh Anderberg, Mobridge, 72 points; 2. Zane Forster, Richardton, N.D., 65.

Barrels: 1. Pam Rolph, Camp Crook, 15 seconds; Skye Martin, Van Tassell, Wyo., 15.10; Lacy Maher, Eagle Butte, 15.11; 4. Jill Moody, Letcher, S.D., 15.13.
