Crazy Horse Memorial maintains a long-standing tradition,
hosting
annual Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend open houses. The events typically include large blasts on the mountain
carving during the Monday holiday, weather permitting. (Watch for details of planned
blasts during each open house.)During the Saturday through Monday holiday weekends, admission is free to
residents of South Dakota and the surrounding states of North Dakota, Nebraska,
Wyoming and Montana. Donation of three cans of food per person is gratefully
accepted for the KOTA Care & Share Food Drive, which distributes food to
Black Hills area communities.
"We invite area residents to be our guests during our Open Houses so they
can see the great progress on the mountain, as well as at the visitor complex,"
says Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation CEO Ruth Ziolkowski.
Many Native American artists and crafts people create their artwork and
visit with guests at the Memorial during the Open House weekends and throughout
the summer. Open house visitors also can see recently donated artifacts
and works of art displayed in the Indian Museum of North America.
During Open House weekends, the
Laughing Water
Restaurant at Crazy Horse opens at 8 a.m. for continental breakfast, and
from
11 a.m. to 8 p.m. serves lunch and dinner. Coffee always is free.
Heritage Village, the southern
entrance to the Memorial, serves all-you-can-eat buffets (lunch daily with breakfasts offered weekends
and holidays). It is a popular addition to visiting
Crazy Horse.
Throughout the year there never is an admission charge at Crazy Horse for
Native Americans, military personnel with active-duty ID, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts
in uniform or residents of Custer County.
