Crazy Horse Memorial
Native American Day celebration

South Dakota's 19th annual celebration of Native American Day will be observed on Monday, October 13, 2008, at Crazy Horse Memorial. It is the world's largest sculpture in progress, on U.S. Highway 16/385, just 17 miles to Mount Rushmore.

Crazy Horse Memorial is a work in progress, a mountain carving begun in 1948 by sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and continued by his wife and family after his death in 1982. The Memorial includes the Native American Educational & Cultural Center (dedicated at the 1996 Native American Day celebration), the sculptor's studio, the Indian Museum of North America, sculpture and galleries, as well as a 40,000-square-foot Welcome Center.

The Native American Day celebration at Crazy Horse each year includes Native American singers, dancers, artists and storytellers. Also, there are hands-on activities for children and (weather permitting) a blast on the mountain carving.
